Microcontroller boards and projects

Another thread starter

People have mentioned microcontroller development boards as a possible SolderSpot area of interest.

Which ones do you know of?

AVR e.g. Arduino
Basic Stamp

Have you used any of them?

What would you like to use them for? Ham or non-ham related?

I have a Velleman K8055 USB board, preassembled,
that I got around 2004.

I found a case for it and added some digital
and analog input/outputs.

I also added a relay to turn a light on!

Here are the specs etc...

The Velleman board is a USB peripheral for a PC. With this you can write programs on the PC to sense and control things.

A microcontroller board allows you to download firmware to the microcontroller that can then run independant of the PC, and the controller can be connected up to things to sense and control them.

The USB board is good if you want an easier development environment and a pre-existing user interface (the PC GUI). But it will always be dependent on the PC. Once you program a microcontroller board, you can unhook it from the PC and use it to interface to something independently. But typically, these boards don't come with a display, although you can add a character LCD display quite easily to some microcontrollers.

Both types have their uses.

I am much more motivated to come up with designs when someone has an idea for something to build, so I am hoping we can discuss some of the uses we could put these things to.
